credit crisis, interbank market lending, information economics?

mhb_valentine asked:

Well, during the current credit crisis, lending on the interbank market nearly came to a halt because Banks did not trust lending to each other.

So can someone use information economics to improve my understanding of what happened?

We’ve seen a possible solution to the problem is having the government provide guarantees for loans in the interbank market. But what are the limits of this approach, again, in the light of information economics?

How do you know what lending company to go with?

My husband and I are in the process of buying our first home. A realtor recommended a loan agency to us to get our pre-qualification letter. I can’t find any information on the internet about this company. She wants to meet with us tomorrow night (in her home I might add). I’m extremely leary just handing over all of my personal information to just anyone. My parents told me I need to just get my loan through a bank since chances are, they’ll buy the loan anyway, but my husband says that this woman will work just fine for us. (I think he is being a little naive about this though). How do you know if you’re working with a reputable lender or if I should get away before it’s too late? DOes it seem weird that she wants to meet with us in her home as opposed to an office? Is there anything I should keep an eye on or pertinent questions I should ask her during our meeting?
Please help!!

We need a new government agency to get consumer information about loans?

What is the truth in lending law for?
is there even such a thing as a teaser rate on a home mortgage? I mean other than an ARM which is competely explained to you in agonizing detail when you sign a mortgage?
Could we maybe just come up with a new law or 2. Do we really need another government agency?

Does anyone know of a lending institution that will give business start up loans to someone with bad credit?

My grandfather had his home paid off and was “talked” into getting money out of his home in a re-fi. He did this about 2 years ago and got more money out like a year ago. He was given an option payment with an adjustable rate. No one else in the family (his children) were not asked or notified about this. My question is does he have a case. He will be losing his house probably in 6 – 8 months. He is an 85 year old man and he lives on Social Security less than $2000 a month. Any help and/or information to get help would be great.

Any lawyers out there will to help out email me joe@southbayideas.com

Thanks

A friend of mine said she did this a while back and she can’t remember what the origional website was called.
You put in your information and then companies bid to loan you money? Potential money lenders can see your profile and give you bids on what they will lend you?

Who is actually responsible for the subprime lending crisis?

Matthew D asked:

Today the band is playing on the deck of our economy, and credit is deadlocked due to sub prime lending.
Is it true that the liberals are responsible, for playing the race card in getting low income persons loans beyond their means?
Or is that just a canard, and are the conservatives actually responsible for cutting interest rates to keep people spending during a declining labor market?
